Description

INDONESIA LAKE TOBA • THE VOLCANIC MIRROR

Giling Basah (Wet-Hulled) • Catimor & Typica • Full Body • Dark Molasses • Winter Spice

Born from the cataclysmic blast that created the world's largest volcanic caldera lake, this coffee carries centuries of raw geological power in every cell. High in the mist-veiled highlands of North Sumatra, at 1,200–1,500 MASL, the land surrounding Lake Toba exists in a state of constant elemental renewal—shaped by explosive volcanic ash, crushing equatorial humidity, and ancient soil chemistry.

Meticulously hand-gathered by smallholder family farms across the rugged ridges of North Sumatra, this is coffee as an ancient partnership with the earth—picked at peak ripeness, brought down from the mountains by the very families whose history is woven into the volcanic soil.

  • Parchment stripped at high moisture, exposing the raw seed to absorb intense mineral character as it dries
  • Altitude: 1,200–1,500 MASL • North Sumatra, Lake Toba region
  • Smallholder family farms • hand-harvested • low acidity • extraordinary structural density

A coffee that cannot be replicated anywhere else on Earth.

French Press
French Press ⭐ Top pick The coating body and dark molasses depth of Lake Toba is made for full immersion. French Press lets the heavy oils and mineral character fully express without filtration stripping them away. Coarse grind, 4–5 minutes at 93–95°C, 1:15 ratio. Press slowly. Expect a thick, woodsmoke-laced cup with a velvet finish.Espresso Lake Toba pulls a remarkable espresso — the structural density and low acidity produce a rich, syrupy shot with dark molasses and winter spice at the fore. Medium-fine grind, 93°C, 1:2 ratio, 25–30 second extraction. Outstanding as the base for a flat white or long black.

Batch Brew
Batch Brew Consistent and deeply comforting — Lake Toba holds beautifully in a thermal carafe without turning bitter. Use a metal or reusable filter to preserve the natural oils and full body this Sumatran is known for. Paper filters will mute the character. Medium grind, standard brew ratio, drink within 2 hours for peak flavour.

Espresso
Espresso Lake Toba pulls a remarkable shot. The structural density and natural low acidity produce a rich, syrupy espresso with dark molasses and winter spice at the fore — no bitterness, just depth. Exceptional as a long black or the base of a flat white. Medium-fine grind, 93°C, 25–30 seconds, 1:2 ratio.

V60
V60 & Paper Filter Methods — Not Recommended Lake Toba is built on oils. The Giling Basah process and volcanic mineral soil produce a coffee of extraordinary structural density — and paper filtration strips the very elements that make it exceptional. What remains is a thinner, flatter cup that undersells this origin significantly. For the full Lake Toba experience, always choose immersion or metal filter methods.

Aeropress
Aeropress Lake Toba thrives under pressure. The Aeropress extracts the full mineral depth and dark body of this Sumatran while giving you complete control over strength and brew time. Medium-fine grind, 90–93°C, 2–3 minutes, inverted method recommended. Press slowly and deliberately. The result is a concentrated, espresso-adjacent cup — rich molasses, winter spice, and a clean finish that belies the intensity. Add hot water to taste for an Americano-style serve.

Cold Press
The Cold Press stands out as an exceptional brewing method for transforming dense Indonesian beans into an incredibly smooth, low-acid concentrate. Utilizing a tight 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio, this slow-steeping brewing method tames the rustic, wild edges of regional coffees over a twelve-to-sixteen-hour period. By pulling flavors using time rather than heat, this specialized brewing method yields a remarkably clean, heavy body that highlights a natural sweetness and complex undertones of molasses, dark cocoa, and sweet tobacco.

  • Caffeine & Heart Health

Indonesia Lake Toba is a fully caffeinated single-origin coffee, naturally processed on the volcanic shores of Lake Toba — one of the world's most extraordinary growing regions. The Giling Basah (wet-hulled) method produces a bold, full-bodied cup with lower acidity, making it smoother on the stomach than many high-roast commercial coffees. Rich in antioxidants and naturally occurring chlorogenic acids. According to the British Heart Foundation, moderate coffee consumption can be part of a healthy lifestyle. All the ritual. All the character.

  • Expert Tip

Grown on the fertile volcanic highlands surrounding Lake Toba, North Sumatra — the world's largest volcanic lake, formed by a supervolcanic eruption 74,000 years ago. Smallholder farmers cultivate Arabica at 1,200–1,500m altitude, where rich volcanic soils, equatorial humidity, and dramatic temperature swings between day and night concentrate every flavour compound in the bean. Processed using the traditional Giling Basah (wet-hull) method — unique to Indonesia — where beans are hulled at high moisture, then sun-dried to produce the region's signature full body, low acidity, and deep earthy complexity. 100% single-origin. Traceable to source.

  • Origin

Chiapas • Oaxaca • Veracruz, Mexico — 1,200–1,800 MASLBorn of volcanoes, shaped by revolution. Mexico's highland coffee is grown by indigenous Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Maya, and Zapotec farming families across Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz — on plots of fewer than three hectares, in shade-grown, chemical-free polyculture forests that have no equal. Decaffeinated at the foot of Pico de Orizaba — Mexico's highest peak at 5,750 metres — using pure glacial meltwater and nothing else. Zero solvents. Zero shortcuts. 99.9% caffeine-free. The bean's soul remains.

  • Storage & Freshness

Keep It Fresh. Keep It Flavourful. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and strong odours. Our resealable pouches are designed to lock in freshness — squeeze out excess air after each use and seal tightly. Once opened, best consumed within 6 months for peak flavour. Unopened, the bag stays fresh for up to 24 months. Do not refrigerate — condensation degrades the bean's natural oils and dulls the earthy, dark chocolate notes that make Lake Toba exceptional. For whole bean, grind only what you need — ground coffee loses its character within days of opening.
